Gauteng police have arrested six suspects for a hijacking and kidnapping incident in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Sello, says one of the suspects, who is believed to be the mastermind of several kidnapping incidents in and around Gauteng, is currently on bail for three other incidents of hijacking, kidnapping, and extortion.
She said Gauteng Organised Crime Investigations and Hillbrow Detectives teamed up with the National Task Team in the search of the victim who was hijacked on 17 November.
Sello said the team received information from Crime Intelligence on the whereabouts of the victim and organised a sting operation which culminated in the arrests and the rescue of the 47-year-old man.
She said he had no visible injuries but was taken to a hospital for a medical check-up before being reunited with his family.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, expressed his relief that the victim was found unharmed.
“Hijacking and kidnappings are becoming a problem for Gauteng but now I am glad that with the measures that we have put in place, supported by the National Head Office, we are starting to see positive results,” he said.
