A group of heavily armed suspects has attacked the Malamulele police station in Limpopo province and robbed police members of several firearms and an undisclosed amount of ammunition.
Colonel Athlenda Mathe says the gang struck around 11 pm on Sunday.
She says some of the police members were forced into the back of a police van while one of them was ordered to unlock the safe where the firearms are kept.
The suspects took R5 rifles, 9mm pistols, shotguns and an unspecified amount of ammunition.
Colonel Mathe says the gang then proceeded to a local food outlet and filling station in the area where they robbed the businesses of an undisclosed amount of cash.
All role players including a multidisciplinary team consisting of crime scene experts and specialised units within the SAPS are combing the scene and are in pursuit of the heavily armed men.
The Provincial Police Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has ordered the implementation of the 72-hour activation plan in an effort to arrest the perpetrators.
