Gangster sentenced to five years for failed grenade attack at home of slain detective Kinnear

A gang member who was involved in a failed hand grenade attack at the house of slain officer Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear in 2019 was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Tuesday.

Hawks Spokesperson Zinzi Hani says 25-year-old Faeez Smith was found guilty on three counts of intimidation and entered into a plea agreement with the State at the Khayelitsha Priority Court.

She says that 10 months after the failed grenade attack, Detective Kinnear was assassinated outside his house in Bishop Lavis.

Smith was sentenced to five years for each count being the Contravention of the provisions of Section 9(2) (a) of POCA, Act 51 of 1977 in that he performed an act that was aimed at causing, bringing about, promoting or contributing towards a pattern of criminal gang activities as set out in Counts 2, Conspiracy to commit possess an explosive device in Contravention of the provisions of Section 28 (1) read with Sections 27 of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956. and Contravention of Section 18 of the Riotous Assemblies Act 17 of 1956.

The sentences will run concurrently and therefore Smith will serve five years in prison.

Several people have been arrested in connection with the death of Detective Kinnear and the murder trial is ongoing.
