Elderly couple burned beyond recognition in Limpopo farm attack

Limpopo police have launched an urgent manhunt for suspects involved in a brutal farm murder where an elderly couple was killed and their farmhouse set alight.

Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the attack took place on a farm at Levubu, outside Thohoyandou on Wednesday afternoon.

He says it is alleged that the 74-year-old farmer and his wife were accosted inside their home before it was ransacked.

Two suspects were seen fleeing in the farmer's vehicle filled with stolen goods.

Lieutenant Colonel Ledwaba says when police arrived on the scene they found the farmhouse on fire and the victims burned beyond recognition.

He says according to their preliminary investigation a passerby noticed two strangers wandering the premises and as they fled in the farmer's vehicle they were somehow disturbed and fled the scene on foot.

Firearms were also stolen from the couple's home.

Police are investigating a double murder, house robbery and arson.

The names of the victims are not known at this stage.
