A Free State game farm worker has been mauled to death by a lioness after fixing the fence and installing a gate on the animal enclosure.
Police spokesperson, Captain Lorraine Earle, said the incident happened on Sunday at around 12.20 after the deceased and supervisor had just finished putting up the gate at one of the lion enclosures.
Earle said the deceased had gone back to the enclosure from his room but was attacked by one of four lions inside.
The 43-year-old victim was rescued by the supervisor, but died after sustaining multiple bites to the neck and body.
Earle said the lioness was euthanized by the SPCA.
An inquest docket has been opened.
