Man arrested for social media post "inciting public violence"

A 36-year-old man from Mbombela is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrates Court on Monday for a social media post that landed him in hot water.

Spokesperson for police Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi says the man is being charged for contravening Section 17 of the Riotous Assemblies Act 17 of 1965-inciting public violence.

She says he allegedly took to social media saying that "the country must be shut down and the President must be removed".

Captain Sekgotodi says the suspect was identified and arrested for further contravening Section 14 of the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020 which says that any person who discloses, by means of electronic communication, a data message to a person or group of persons or the public in general with the intention to incite violence shall be guilty as charged.

Last month, a man who shared fake news on his social media about an apparent assassination plot against President Cyril Ramaphosa was sentenced to five years of direct imprisonment.

Elrico Kaizer Kasper, 38, was found guilty and sentenced in the De Aar Magistrates Court in the Northern Cape.

In March this year, Kasper posted on his social media that 'some people' were planning to assassinate President Ramaphosa during his visit to De Aar on Human Rights Day.
