Free State police are investigating a case of assault after a Smithfield policeman was caught on CCTV assaulting a woman at a petrol station.
Free State police spokesperson Billy Jones says police were alerted to the alleged assault, which took place last Friday, by eye witnesses.
He says the woman did not want to report the assault.
Its alleged that she's involved in an extra-marital affair with the policeman and did not want her husband to find out.
The case has been referred to the police watch-dog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.
