A Free State Farmer is in police custody in a hospital following a shooting incident that claimed the life of 28-year-old Evan Felix Sorour.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring says the drama unfolded on a farm in Ficksburg on Sunday night when the accused complained about cattle that crossed over into his land, damaging his fence in the process.
He says the farmer, 56-year-old Reuter Sorour and his 28-year-old son arrived at the fence and moved their cattle out of the way.
WO Mophiring says it is alleged that the suspect started to assault the farmer who called his son to help.
He says the accused pulled out his firearm and shot the son five times before he himself was shot in the hip by the victim.
Police found the father and son along the R26 near a garage where they pulled over in an attempt to drive to the hospital.
WO Mophiring says Sorour died before reaching the hospital.
He says they tracked down the other farmer at a hospital in Bethlehem where he was placed under arrest.
Police also confiscated his firearm.
WO Mophiring says both firearms used in the incident have been confiscated.
He says the farmer has since opened a case of attempted murder that will also be investigated.
He is expected to appear in the Ficksburg Magistrates Court as soon as he is discharged from the hospital.
