Four suspects are in police custody following a deadly attack on a Cape fur seal on Sunday evening at Monwabisi beach.
The Deputy Mayor for Cape Town Alderman Eddie Andrew says the seal had to be euthanised due to the severity of its injuries.
"This is one of the most brutal attacks on our wildlife in recent times. One cannot fathom the pain and stress the seal had to endure while this was happening. I am shocked and horrified and call on the public to please keep on notifying us when they see animals being attacked, harmed or in distress, " he said.
Andrew says the suspects were arrested following an anonymous tip-off.
He urged locals to respect and distance themselves from marine animals.
Last week a seal went viral on social media when it attacked two bathers on Clifton Beach last week.
