A former executive of Steinhoff International Holdings appeared in court on Friday, a day after former CEO, Marcus Jooste, took his own life.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Stephanus Grobler faces charges that include fraud and the contravention of the Financial Markets Act.
Spokesperson, Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga, said the NPA and Hawks secured arrest warrants for "the lead suspects" in the Steinhoff matter on 20 March.
“The allegations include amongst others fraud, a pattern of racketeering activities, and contravention of the Financial Markets Act against Steinhoff International Holdings,” he said.
Mhaga said authorities also secured the country’s “exit routes” before their lawyers were notified about the arrest warrants and that Jooste and Grobler appear in court.
“The suspects were expected to hand themselves over at Pretoria Central Police Station and thereafter appear in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today.
“After being notified of the arrest warrants, Mr Jooste allegedly committed suicide on the afternoon of 21 March 2024,” he said.
