Former PE businessman at centre of State Capture Inquiry

Former Port Elizabeth businessman, Gavin Watson, was at the centre of testimony at the State Capture Commission on Wednesday by the former COO of his company, Bosasa.

Angelo Agrizzi told how he was recruited in 1999 by the company then known as Dyambu, which later became Bosasa, as a marketing coordinator even though he was involved in many other aspects of the business.

In his wide-ranging testimony, Agrizzi explained how money had been presented to individuals in bags and also about daily prayer meetings led by Watson and which, at times, led to all-night sessions.

He said Watson was a charismatic leader with influence over his employees.

Bosasa, which has since changed its name to African Global Operations, has been accused of bribing officials to obtain contracts with the Department of Correctional Services among a host of other allegations.

Agrizzi claimed that he was present in meetings at Dyambu's offices where Watson allegedly paid money to the late union leader, Jackson Mafika, at Kloof gold mine to secure support for the company.

He also claimed that the cash was delivered and typically handed over in grey cash bags, but conceded to Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo that he did not see the money itself.

Mafika was ANC chief whip at the Westonaria Municipality and the head of NUM in the area.

He said Bosasa spent between R4 million to R6 million a month in cash for bribes.

The hearing continues on Thursday.
