A former Johannesburg attorney has been released on bail after being accused of swindling nearly R700 000 of his client’s money paid out by the Road Accident Fund.
The 48-year-old Lwandle Mkhonto, appeared at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court earlier this week after he was arrested by the Hawks Commercial Crime Investigation Team.
It is believed that R1.2 million of his client’s pay-out was deposited in his trust account in August 2008.
The victim, who was a cyclist before being hit by a truck in March 1998, and now lives with a disability, only received a payment of 200-thousand rand.
The Hawks say Mkhonto, who has been struck off the roll of attorney’s, was released on bail of R5 000 and his case postponed until next month.
