Five robbery and carjacking suspects were killed in a shootout with Durban police on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said K-9 unit members were following up information about a stolen vehicle used in a number of cases in Durban.
She said the vehicle was spotted and a chase ensued which ended with the car crashing into a concrete light pole and brick wall where it overturned on Woodlands Avenue in Bellair.
Mbele said shots were fired at the police who returned fire, killing five suspects in their thirties.
“Three unlicensed firearms with six rounds of ammunition were seized,” she said.
Police positively linked the men to a business robbery in Umbilo and a carjacking in Pinetown on Tuesday morning.
None of the police members were wounded during the incident.
