Farm killer who escaped from custody 15-years ago rearrested

Thapelo Samuel Mokoena who was on the run for 15-years

SAPS

A man who killed an elderly woman and her employee on her farm in Bethlehem in the Free State in 2004 has been arrested after 15-years on the run.

The 40-year-old Thapelo Samuel Mokoena was arrested for the murder of 72-year-old Johanna van Niekerk and her 43-year-old employee Tororo Tsholo.

Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says Mokoena escaped from the holding cells on the 27th of July 2005, a day before sentencing.

In July a photograph was circulated via the media in efforts to track down Mokoena or any information on his whereabouts.

The exercise bore fruit and Mokoena was arrested on the 12th of August at Hlanganani mine in Gauteng.

Brigadier Makhele says he was spotted by community members who alerted police.

Mokoena is expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrates Court on Friday where he will face an extra charge of escaping from lawful custody.
