Eastern Cape police mourn death of one of their own

Eastern Cape provincial commissioner Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene has extended her condolences to the family and loved ones of Captain Mawethu Mantshiyose from the Public Order Policing Unit in Aliwal North who paid the ultimate sacrifice while in the line of duty.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Captain Mantshiyose was stabbed by a suspect wanted in connection with an assault to cause grievous bodily harm case.

She said the officer was rushed to the nearest clinic for treatment, however he succumbed to his injuries.

Colonel Naidu said the incident happened on Tuesday when the unit provided back-up to SAPS in Phumalanga in the Ndungunya location.

"The suspect ran out of the house with a knife and spear in his hand," Colonel Naidu said.

"He stabbed Captain Mantshiyose on the back of his neck [and] when the police captain fell, the suspect re-advanced towards him in an attempt to stab him again."

She said the 40-year-old suspect was then fatally shot by police.

Lt Gen Mene extends her condolences to the family, loved ones and colleagues of the fallen police officer.

"Our hearts go out to the family, and we offer our deepest sympathies during this difficult time.

"In the face of this senseless act, justice was swift. The suspect responsible for this heinous act was shot dead. Let this be a stark reminder that we will not tolerate attacks on those who selflessly protect and serve.

"We stand resilient, and any assault/attack on our police officers will be met with unwavering resolve.

"We honour the sacrifice made in the line of duty and reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding those who dedicate their lives to keeping their communities safe."
