The Regional Court President for Kwazulu Natal appeared in court on Thursday for allegedly contravening the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities (PRECCA) Act.

The National Prosecuting Authority said 62-year-old Eric Nzimande was charged with five counts for allegedly receiving unauthorised gratification of approximately R230 000.

She said he was responsible for making recommendations to the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services for the appointment of Acting Regional Court Magistrates.

Ramkisson-Kara said Nzimande, who was suspended in 2018, made several recommendations to the Minister between April 2012 and October 2015.

"The state is alleging that he sought and received gratification from each of these people, either before, during, or shortly after their appointments," she said.

Nzimande was served with an indictment during his court appearance and the matter was adjourned to 20 May next year for his first appearance in the high court.
