Driehoek Tragedy: Legal action underway

It's been nearly three months since the Hoërskool Driehoek tragedy where four children were killed when a walkway collapsed in February.

The MEC for Education in Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi was at the school on Tuesday where a brand new walkway was opened.

He suggested that the bridge be named after the learners who lost their lives, in order to honour them.

Lesufi said he would ask the parent's permission first, before doing so.

The 14-year-old Jandre Steyn, 17-year-old Roydon Olckers and the 13-year-old Marli Curry died on the scene while another learner, Marnus Nagel died later in hospital.

Lesufi says the Department will assist all parents who have outstanding medical bills and bills not covered in the crowdfunding from the Chamber of Commerce, will be topped up by the Department.

He said they made the commitment and will stand by it.

Lesufi said the department is facing legal action over the matter but added that many legal documents related to medical claims.

He said certain parents were not happy with what was being offered and they have taken the matter to their lawyers.

The MEC said he does not want the Department to be in a legal fight with parents and requested his lawyers not to oppose any legal action.

Some of the parents are claiming more money for trauma and other medical expenses.
