Almost all crimes in South Africa have shown drastic increases in the period between January and March this year, with more serious crimes like murder and rape showing increases of 22.2% and 13.7%, respectively.
The latest quarterly crime stats released by Police Minister Bheki Cele indicate that in the three months to the end of March, there were 6 083 murders reported in the country and 13 799 sexual offences.
Attempted murder jumped by a staggering 24.8%, with 5717 reported cases in the same period.
Assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily increased by 18.1%, cash-in-transit robberies by 26.2% and carjackings by 19.7%.
Contact sexual offences dropped by 1.1% and robberies at residential properties also eased slightly by 0.4%.
The Democratic Alliance says Eastern Cape SAPS is losing control of the spiralling violent crime in the province, with the highest murder rate per capita in the country at 15.7 murders per 100 000 people.
The province also has the highest rape rate per capita with 27.6 rapes per 100 000 people.
1045 people were murdered, an increase of 11.7% compared to the same period last year.
There were also a disturbingly high 2 230 sexual offence cases reported, up 10.2%, with Lusikisiki once again having the highest number of reported cases in the country

706 cases of common robbery up 11.4%
2 789 cases of robbery with aggravated circumstances, up 2.3%
