A medical doctor who was barred from practising medicine in South Africa eight years ago has been arrested again.
Spokesperson for the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) Priscilla Sekhonyana says Dr Rasheed Mahfouz is currently in police custody in Philippi in the Western Cape following his arrest last week.
Mahfouz was suspended and struck off the roll a decade ago for practising medicine outside the scope of his profession, as well as issuing fraudulent medical certificates and dispensing medicine without the necessary license.
Sekhonyana says Mahfouz was hired by a registered doctor, Dr Augustus, who has subsequently been reported to the HPCSA for misconduct.
Dr Mahfouz will be back in court on Thursday to apply for bail.
Sekhonyana says a second unregistered doctor was arrested at a practice in Stellenbosch during the same operation.
She says Ilunga Nzabadi, a Congolese citizen was also appointed by a registered South African doctor who will also face a disciplinary hearing.
