A mother from Jan Kempdorp in the Northern Cape is expected to appear in court on Wednesday where she is facing a charge of child neglect.
Police Spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock says the mother was arrested in September last year when an anonymous person alerted police about her three children aged two, eight and 11 roaming the streets alone at midnight.
He says when police investigated they found the children to be malnourished and physically abused.
Sergeant Kock says the children had also not been enrolled in school for more than two years.
He says the mother was arrested and released on warning before the children were removed from her care.
He says, Detective Sergeant Andrew Ntlhati from the Harswater Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) had gone the extra mile in ensuring that the two older children were enrolled in school with the necessary uniforms and other supplies they needed.
Sergeant Kock says even the local bottle store donated food to the children who are now living with a caregiver.
The Provincial Head for the FCS, Brigadier Nicky Mills, expressed his gratitude to Detective Sergeant Nhlati and his wife for their noble gesture.
