A medical doctor, who is also one of South Africa's most popular gospel singers, has been arrested along with his wife for allegedly defrauding the National Lotteries Board (NLB).
The 39-year-old Dr Tumisang Makweye and his 36-year-old wife Kgaogelo Sara were listed as committee members of a non-profit organisation.
They allegedly submitted altered grant application documents to the NLB for approval on funds for a project in 2018.
Police Spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu says this resulted in an amount of more than R1.5 million being transferred into their private bank accounts.
He says the couple allegedly benefitted to the tune of R760 000 while their two co-accused got the rest.
The doctor and his wife handed themselves over to police with their attorney present and appeared briefly in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday where they were granted bail of R3 000 each.
Captain Mulamu says their co-accused, 46-year-old Christopher Tshivule and 48-year-old Thomas Ndadza, were granted bail of R5 000 each.
The matter was postponed to the 7th of May.
