The Western Cape High Court has granted an interdict halting the closure of 18 schools.
High Court Judge Siraj Desai said he would give reasons for his decision later.
The application was brought by the schools, their governing bodies and the SA Democratic Teachers' Union to stop the closure of the schools at the end of the month.
They said the planned closures were unlawful and unconstitutional.
Western Cape Education Minister, Donald Grant maintained the low enrollment numbers, multi-grade classes, or a decline in pupil numbers, were behind the reasons for his decision.
