A policeman has been killed in a shootout with a criminal gang in Mpumalanga during a raid on a guesthouse in Kabokweni.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said the incident occurred on Friday morning when police, acting on a tip-off, descended on the guesthouse where 15 men were allegedly planning a robbery.
He said when the suspects spotted the approaching police, they opened fired, fatally wounding Sergeant Enoch Nsimba, of the Kabokweni Visible Policing Unit.
Mohlala said one suspect was wounded, while six others were arrested. A manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects.
“A total of eight firearms with ammunition were also confiscated, including an AK-47 rifle as well as two other rifles and five pistols.
Four vehicles were also confiscated,” he said.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear at the Kabokweni Magistrate's Court on Monday.
