The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has taken the decision to withdraw the rape and sexual assault charges against 14 people accused of gang-raping a group of women in Krugersdorp.
Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the 13 men and one minor could not be linked with DNA and all other evidence was insufficient to proceed with prosecution.
She says they were part of a group of 80 people arrested in July on immigration charges during a police crackdown on illegal miners, otherwise known as 'Zama Zama's.
The story sent shockwaves through the country as eight women described their horrific ordeal of how they were gang raped by men wearing balaclavas on a day they were filming a music video for a gospel artist.
The NPA says even the charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances had been withdrawn against the accused.
Mjonondwane says they remain in custody though as they are still being charged with contravening the immigration act.
They will all re-appear in court on the 1st of November.
Earlier this month a member of the film crew was arrested after stolen goods belonging to the victims were found in her possession.
Dolphina Truter, who is also a former police officer appeared in court on charges of theft and defeating the ends of Justice.
