Police in the Free State are investigating the death of four children who suffocated after being stuck inside an old car.
Police in Reitz were called out to a house in Petsana on Wednesday afternoon after the children were discovered inside the vehicle.
A spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring says when they arrived on the scene the children were already removed from the Volvo S40 Sedan.
The kids, aged between two and four were declared dead on the scene.
It is alleged that the children were last seen playing outside in the morning under the supervision of their 72-year-old grandmother.
Mophiring says she looked for the children all day until they were discovered unconscious inside the car.
The children were identified as three-year-old Lesedi Mnguni; three-year-old Jwalane Goodness; two-year-old Lerato Donald Tshabalala and four-year-old Mojalefa Mokoena.
An inquest docket was opened for further investigation.
