Chaos erupts in Cape Town as looting continues


Chaos erupted on the Cape Flats on Tuesday when several grocery stores, wholesalers and burglaries occurred.

A police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potela says in Gatesville, 16 suspects stormed a supermarket where they threatened cashiers and stole five cash registers with cash an groceries.

She says police managed to arrest four suspects between the ages of 21 and 24.

Potelwa says in Mitchellsplain the Public Order Police (POPS) had to be deployed as residents were burning tyres to protest about the distribution of food parcels to some communities.

Three suspects aged 16, 18 and 20 were arrested for public violence.

Meanwhile, two Nelson Mandela Bay Metro police officers were injured when their vehicle was stoned by a group of people looting a spaza shop in the city’s northern areas.

Port Elizabeth police had their hands full trying to quell incidents of looting reported in different areas of Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp where at least four shops were targeted.
