The South African toddler who sustained third-degree burns during a braai in 2011, is turning 14.

Pippie Kruger made international headlines when firelighter gel, used by her father on New Year's Eve, exploded in his hands and fell on her.

She was only two years old at the time.

Pippie and her mother Anice have crept into the hearts of many South Africans who followed their journey with reconstructive surgery.

According to a report in News 24, Pippie has already had more than 60 surgeries.

The non-profit organisation "Helpende Hand" chose Anice Barnard to be the first recipient of a new award under their national "FroueVonds" project.

The project consists of various non-profit initiatives to assist women in finding work, provide counselling for victims and assist children, who cannot afford tertiary education, to go to University.

A spokesperson for "Helpende Hand", Phillip Bruwer says Anice is a perfect example of a woman who gives hope and encouragement while being a role model to others.
