A Free State police officer was shot and killed in the early hours of Friday morning after reporting that he was following a hijacked truck on a gravel road between Villiers and Standerton.
Spokesperson, Sergeant Josephine Rani, says 47-year-old Detective Warrant Officer, Neels du Randt, was found shot to death in his bakkie after requesting backup from Villiers police.
She says members who followed up on Du Rand's call, found his body in his bakkie which was found on a farm.
Rani said he had sustained four gunshot wounds to the back, while the hijacked truck was found abandoned near Standerton.
She says their preliminary investigation revealed that the hijacked truck was carrying catalytic converters and was being escorted by occupants in a white BMW.
