Baby killed with pellet gun - distraught parents say it was an accident

A 36-year-old father from a village in Limpopo has been arrested for accidentally killing his seven-month-old child with a pellet gun.

The spokesperson for police Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says both parents were interviewed and it was revealed that the father was hunting for birds next to their home when the child was accidentally shot on Sunday.

He says the parents rushed the child to the local clinic where he was declared dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Colonel Ledwaba says the investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The father was arrested and charged with murder and the pellet gun was confiscated.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Major General Jan Scheepers condemned the incident and urged communities to practice safety at all times when handling these types of weapons.

The man will make his first appearance in the Nebo Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
