ANC chief whip in parliament Mathole Motshekga has cautioned government officials and politicians that parliament will not be tolerating any excuses for poor performance.
Motshekga made these comments in an interview on the eve of President Jacob's Zuma's fifth state of the nation speech which is expected to focus on improve the way government functions.
Parliament reopens Thursday just days after the Auditor General revealed that irregular expenditure in government departments has doubled every year for the last three years.
Motshekga, however, says this year will be one where swift action is taken against errant officials and non-performing politicians.
He says MPs will be empowered by clear instruction from the ANC to improve service delivery.
This will be reinforced by what is expected to be a deliver at all costs message in Zuma's state of the nation address.
Motshekga also dismissed suggestions that, in spite of the tough talk, MPs will continue to tread cautiously around ministers who are their seniors in the ANC.
He says ministers are public representatives that are subject to the authority of parliament and its committees.
