Western Cape police have arrested a man and a woman they believe may be behind a spate of robberies at guesthouses in the province.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, said police arrested a 32-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman from Brackenfell, initially for the theft of a motorcycle.
However, he said follow-up investigations led to the discovery of a large number of keys, wigs, jewellery, knives, surgical gloves as well as housebreaking implements.
Van Wyk said the saga unfolded from Wednesday when members of the Flying Squad spotted a vehicle that was linked to the theft of a motorcycle at hospital in Brackenfell.
He said the man was subsequently arrested and the motorcycle recovered from a house in Protea Heights in Brackenfell, where the woman was arrested on a charge of being in possession of stolen property.
While at the scene, police noticed that a white Nissan Tida parked in front of the premises was also circulated in relation to a theft case in Franschhoek.
"Upon searching the vehicle police found a wig, knives, surgical gloves and jewellery. They then searched the boot and found a large amount of keys, remote controls, USB sticks, more knives, wigs and surgical gloves and other housebreaking implements hidden in the panels of the boot," Van Wyk said.
He said a USB stick found amongst the items also belonged to another complainant in a housebreaking case last October, while the suspects have also been linked to another fraud and theft case at a guesthouse in Groot Drakenstein.
Van Wyk said they are also investigating their possible links to other cases.
The two are due to appear in Kuilsrivier Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
