All calm in strife-torn Sasolburg

The situation in Sasolburg is calm at the moment but police are still warning motorists to avoid roads in the town.

Free State police spokesperson, Peter Kareli, says the R57 and R82 are especially dangerous.
He says protesters are hiding in the grass at the side of the road and are throwing stones and petrol bombs at passing motorists.

Kareli says more people were arrested during the night with around 180 protesters currently in police custody.

Some of those will appear in the Sasolburg Magistrates court today on charges of public violence.

Meanwhile 70 people were arrested for public violence during a service delivery protest in Hennenman on Monday.
Police say the protesters tried to burn down shops and disrupted schools.

Police managed to gain control of the situation and the town is calm on Tuesday morning.
