Police reinforcements have been brought in from Gauteng and Welkom to help manage a protest by residents of Zamdela township in Sasolburg.
Residents protesting against municipal demarcation plans set two trucks alight on Monday.
They injured two police officers and looted a number of spaza shops and bottle stores.
Zamdela residents have promised to continue their strike, until plans to merge Sasolburg with the Ngwathe local municipality are abandoned.
