Five people appeared in court in Kempton Park on Friday in connection with a massive drug haul found in Australia in October.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said Stanley Nkuna, Justice Mahloma, Madimetje Mahangwhane, Thulani Sibiya, and Fuba Mahlangu, were arrested on Wednesday in a joint operation that included the Australian Federal Police.
She said they are employees of the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), Menzies Aviation and Swissport, and had allegedly facilitated the passage of drugs through OR Tambo International Airport.
Mathe said they face charges of drug trafficking, contravention of the Civil Aviation Act and contravention of the Customs and Excise Act came after were arrested after a large consignment of drugs, with an estimated value of R500 million, was seized in Australia.
“The investigation is continuing and the DPCI does not rule out the possibility of more suspects being arrested,” she said.
The case against the five was postponed to 23 November for a formal bail application.
