New vehicle sales in South Africa plunged by 98.4% to 574 units in April compared with the same month last year.
The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) says this reflects the impact of the COVID-19 national lockdown which brought most business activity to a virtual standstill.
Compared with March of this year, when 33-thousand 546 units were sold, new vehicle sales were down 98.3% in April.
New vehicle exports in April were down 97.3% at 901 units compared with the same month last year.
NAAMSA said vehicle and automotive component production, the bedrock of the country’s manufacturing sector, would gradually ease back into production as vehicle output resumed this week under strict risk-adjusted measures.
