Weather warnings aplenty for Eastern Cape

The SA Weather Service has issued a number of weather warnings for the Eastern Cape this weekend, including disruptive snow over the Southern Drakensberg which could result in traffic disruptions and isolated loss of vulnerable livestock and crops.

Weather Office spokesperson Garth Sampson says damaging wind is expected along the Southern coast, west of Algoa Bay overnight Friday evening, spreading to Coffee Bay on Saturday morning.

Sampson says the gale force south-westerly wind could result in damage to property, and disrupt traffic and maritime activity.

High Seas with damaging waves, that could result in disruption to ports and harbours and put smaller vessels at risk, are expected between Plettenberg Bay and East London, spreading to Port Edward.

Sampson says small stock farmers are advised to shelter their animals and the public taking part in hiking and outdoor recreational activities should take the necessary precautions.

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 9 and 17 degrees in the Eastern Cape with Komani and Makhanda reaching a mid-day high of only 9 degrees Celcius.

Stay tuned to Algoa FM for regular weather updates and warnings.

Trans Baviaans

Weekend two of the  annual TransBaviaans Mountain Bike race this coming Saturday is going to dish up more challenging conditions

Hundreds of mountain bikers abandoned the first weekend of the 230-kilometre trek from Willowmore to Jeffrey's Bay last Saturday because of the mud, rain and extreme cold.

Sampson says bikers taking part this Saturday will have a strong westerly wind to contend with but not too much rain.

He says, however, that competitors will have to take the wind-chill factor into account. which could see a drop in temperatures to around freezing on the route.
