Overnight rain confined to the coast

Welcome rain fell across large parts of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro overnight, with 10.6 mm measured at the airport and 15.4 mm at 3rd avenue dip in Newton Park.

It appears, however, that the rain was mostly confined to the coast with very little falling in the catchment area in the Langkloof where the Metro's main supply dams are currently at just 10.06% of total combined capacity.

However, local weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson says the latest weather models are showing good falls in the catchment area over the next two days.

He says with the freezing level dropping to about 4 000 feet, it also augurs well for snow over the Langkloof which will ultimately contribute to run-off into the dams.

Snowfall is also expected over large parts of the Eastern Cape which could lead to the loss of livestock.

Warnings for Wednesday:

  • Disruptive snowfall is expected over Lootsberg, Wapadsberg, Penhoek, Outeniqua, Nico Malan and Winterberg on Wednesday.
  • Small harbours could be disrupted by a coastal wind of between 55-65km/h between Plettenberg Bay and East London.

Warnings for Thursday:

  • Disruptive snowfall is expected over Lootsberg, Wapadsberg, Penhoek, Outeniqua, Nico Malan, Winterberg passes as well as gravel road passes in the Tsitsikamma, Outeniqua and Baviaanskloof mountains.
  • Rain can lead to flooding of roads and settlements along the coast and adjacent interiors between Plettenberg Bay and Fish River.
