NMB's main catchment areas received less than 5 mm of rain

Welcome rain fell over large parts of the Eastern Cape in the past two days, but Nelson Mandela Bay weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson warns that it has done little to advert the current water crisis.

He said the Metro’s main catchment area in the Langkloof had received less than 5 mm, which is not good enough to provide any meaningful runoff.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s airport received 22 mm of rain in the past 48 hours while 19 mm was measured at 3rd avenue dip in Newton Park.

Sampson said the weather is generally clearing from the west with more rain expected next week over most of the province.

Earlier on Friday, the Gamtoos Irrigation Board reported that its farmers are becoming increasingly concerned as the level of one of the Eastern Cape’s largest supply dams approaches record lows.

It warned that the Kouga Dam looks set to run dry for the first time ever as its current level has dropped to below 7%.
