EC rainfall - every drop counts

Nelson Mandela Bay’s main catchment area in the Langkloof received some welcome rain on Thursday.

The Metro’s four main supply dams are currently at just under 20% of total combined capacity, so every drop in the Langkloof counts at the moment.

The PE Weather Office reports that Kareedouw received 12 mm in the past 24 hours, up until 8 am, and Joubertina 4 mm.

Just over 1 mm was measured at the Port Elizabeth Airport but 5.6 mm fell at the 3rd Avenue dip in Newton Park.

Uitenhage received 5.4 mm.

Elsewhere, over the past two days, Komani received a healthy 67 mm, Cradock 45.2, East London 30, Makhanda 17.4 and Bisho/King William’s Town 22.2.

Plettenberg Bay has measured 20.8 mm since Tuesday.

On Wednesday evening the R58 section between Aliwal North and Lady Grey was flooded and even the alternative road, which is a gravel road, was closed for traffic.

The N6 between Jamestown and Aliwal North was also waterlogged whilst rockfalls were reported on the Kraairivier, Wolfhuis and Barkley Passes.

The Walter Sisulu Local Municipality continues to monitor the situation and is on standby for immediate response and rescue.
