A cold front is approaching from the west and is expected to make landfall over the Western Cape on Thursday morning.

SA Weather Services spokesperson Garth Sampson says this will lead to strong to near gale force north westerly winds across large parts of the Eastern Cape.

Sampson says the strong winds on the coast will lead to wave heights of 4 to 5.5 m by Thursday evening, reaching 6 to 8 metres between Tsitsikamma and East London on Friday.

Warnings issued for the Eastern Cape for Thursday and Friday:

Strong wind in places over Dr Beyers Naude LM, Blue Crane Route LM, Raymond Mhlaba LM, Chris Hani DM and Joe Gqabi DM resulting in some disruptions to road transport, localized damages to some settlements as well as localized problems to high-sided vehicles.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in places over Sarah Baartman DM, Raymond Mhlaba LM, Chris Hani DM, Joe Gqabi DM and Matatiele LM.

On Friday, damaging waves can be expected in places between the Tsitsikamma coast and East London resulting in some localized damages to coastal infrastructure and the disruption of small harbours and/or ports.

Small vessels are at risk of taking on water and capsizing while small to medium vessels will have difficulty navigating as a result of the combination of damaging winds and high seas.
