South African Captain Temba Bavuma smashed a career-best 144 runs, but it was not enough to see his side over the line in the Betway One Day International against West Indies in East London.
The visitors won the second ODI by 48 runs in what turned out to be a battle of the captains.
Man of the Match, West Indies captain, Shai Hope, led from the front with an unbeaten 128 runs as they posted a massive total of 335 for 8, the highest total against South Africa.
Bavuma and opening partner, Quinton de Kock, who made 48, got the home side off to a brisk start. However, the middle order failed to fire, with Tony de Zorzi the next highest scorer with 27, Marco Jansen made 17 and Ryan Rickelton made 14.
Lungi Ngidi with 12 looked like he might support Bavuma to the end, but the captain, who batted deep into the innings, gloved one to his counterpart, Shai Hope, sparking the late collapse.
South Africa were without a number of frontline players, fielding a reasonably inexperienced side.
The first Betway ODI at the same venue was washed out on Thursday, and South Africa has one more opportunity next Tuesday in Potchefstroom to level the series before the T20 Internationals start.
