Warriors into 2nd on One Day table

THE Chevrolet Warriors leap-frogged the Sunfoil Dolphins on the Momentum One-Day Cup table as Davy Jacobs outlasted an on-song Kyle Abbott to secure a two-wicket win in Sunday’s match in Pietermaritzburg.

Abbott struck in each of his three spells to put intense pressure on the Warriors as they chased 223 in a low-scoring match, but Jacobs held his nerve to get his side across the line with 11 balls to spare.

Victory puts the Warriors level on points with the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, but the Cobras still top the standings because they have won one more game. The Dolphins are third with one less point, having played an extra game.

With the wicket never allowing batsmen to score freely, nobody registered a half-century in the match. Imraan Khan (41), Vaughn van Jaarsveld (48) and Daryn Smit (44) came closest for the Dolphins as they notched 222 for nine after electing to bat first.

That made for a tight chase, particularly after Abbott and Graham Onions had reduced the Warriors to 23 for two, but the visitors got back on track thanks to Colin Ingram (41), who was back from a brief stint with the Proteas in the UAE, and Ryan Bailey (45).

However, Smit dismissed both batsmen in a tidy spell, and then Abbott got the better of both Christiaan Jonker and Simon Harmer to leave the Warriors in trouble at 151 for seven.

The Warriors still had plenty of time, though, which Jacobs recognised as he nudged the ball around in an unbeaten 35 from 65 balls that was well complemented by Andrew Birch’s swift 45.

Abbott returned once again to get rid of Birch but, with the seamer’s overs spent, it was Jacobs who had the final say.
