Final Score: South Africa 12 France 5
South Africa and France went into this pool A game with a win a piece and looking to book a Cup quarter-final berth with a game to spare. France drew first blood when Paul Albaladejo pounced on a lose ball to score in the corner.
Blitzbokke then pounce on a loose ball and France have a player sent to the sin bin. Cornal Hendricks scores in the corner and its 5-all at half time. Cecil Afrika’s knee is a worry, he does not look as comfortable as he appeared in the 29-7 win over Samoa in the first game. Massive 7 minutes coming up in the second half – go Blitzbokke!
Big try by one of the veterans of the team Paul Delport after a great build up mid-way through the second half. Cecil Afrika converts and with 3:48 to play South Africa lead 12-5. That’s the way it stayed until the final whistle and the Blitzbokke have one hand on a cup quarter-final berth tomorrow. A win over Australia in the late game at 19h36 this evening will ensure that South Africa top Pool A. That’s what coach Paul Treu is aiming for and he hinted that he will probably play Cecil Afrika off the bench against the Aussies who stayed in the tournament with an impressive 26-7 rout of Samoa.
Blitzbokke captain Frankie Horn was delighted with the team’s two wins so far today and said the lads had dug deep against France. He said the team had been lifted playing at home, a sentiment endorsed by his 2IC Paul Delport. Delport scored the clincher against France and was very happy with the way this young team had stood up to the pressure in the win over France. The horrors of last week’s performance in Dubai are fast becoming a distant memory for the Blitzbokke at the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens.
