A year since breaking his back after being hit by a car, Matt Trautman, won his third Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa title in East London on Sunday.
He finished in an overall time of 4:09:19 ahead of Kenneth Vandendriessche (4:11:13) and Evert Scheltinga (4:12:13)
Trautman said afterwards that this win was definitely special, coming after the serious injury.
“Definitely, one of the more special wins,” he told Algoa FM News.
In the women’s section, US-based Jeanni Seymour took advantage of the perfect early morning race conditions, to win in a time of 4:32:23.
"This is where triathlon started for me as an age grouper when I was 19 years old. Shortly after that, I turned professional and now live in Boulder, Colorado in the US where I've been training. This is the fifth time doing this race but my first time I've been able to win here, which is pretty cool," she said.
Emma Pallant was in second (4:34:21) while Judith Vaquera was third (4:44:24).
