Williams was just as ruthless as she beat US compatriot Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-1.
Eight seed Caroline Wozniacki crashed to a painful loss as World No. 96 Irina-Camelia Begu beat her 6-2, 6-2.
Andy Roddick eased past compatriot and qualifier Rhyne Williams, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Fellow US veteran Venus Williams also won an all-American match-up, beating wildcard Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-1.
