More information has come to light about Sunday’s arrest of Springbok rugby player Elton Jantjies (31) who was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport shortly after landing on a flight from Dubai.

Jantjies 's agent from In Touch Sports, James Adams, confirmed in a statement that the flyhalf was arrested for allegedly damaging a light on the plane.

Adams believes the matter has been taken out of context.

"It's alleged that while onboard the plane, a light was damaged. We believe that the incident has been unnecessarily heightened."

"Our client, however, remains compliant with the investigation process and will address this matter with the seriousness it beckons," he added.

According to the Statement, Jantjies was in Turkey where he spent time with his family, before returning to South Africa alone.

The flyhalf faces charges of malicious damage to property.

News24 quoted two eyewitnesses telling a very different story, alleging that Jantjies was unstable on his feet and banged against a toilet door until his fists bled.

Jantjies has played in more than 40 Tests for the Springboks and was part of the 2019 squad that won the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

He appeared in court and was granted bail.
