Spain crash out of World Cup

Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque could not hide his disappointment after the holders were eliminated from the World Cup last night following a 2-0 defeat to Chile in Rio de Janeiro.

He described it as a sad day for the team and the country after Spain were left without a point from two games in Group B, having lost 5-1 to the Netherlands in their opening match last Friday.

Its the first time in World Cup history that the defending champion has lost its opening two matches at the next edition.

First-half goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz took Chile into the last 16 and saw Spain become the first team along with Australia to be eliminated from the 2014 tournament.

Australia earlier put up a brave fight before losing 3-2 to the Netherlands who also secured their place in the last 16.

Cameroon coach Volker Finke said an on-field bust-up between two of his players during the team's abject 4-0 defeat against Croatia in yesterday's late game was "disgusting" and bemoaned a lack of discipline and effort by his players.

The defeat in the Group A game confirmed Cameroon's exit from the tournament after a second successive defeat.
