Defending champion Maria Sharapova cruised into the third round of the French Open at Roland Garros today with a 6 2 6 4 win over Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard.
Sharapova next plays China's Zheng Jie who eased past Melanie Oudin of the United States 6-3, 6-1.
Amongst the men: Raphael Nadal, chasing an unprecedented eighth Roland Garros title, lost the first set but saw off Slovakia's Martin Klizan 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to record his 54th win in 55 matches at the tournament.
Nadal goes on to face Italian 27th seed Fabio Fognini for a place in the last 16.
In his 52nd grand slam event, 35 year-old German 12th seed reached the third round in straight sets over American qualifier Jack Sock.
