The South African Rugby Union has asked its competition committee to relook the Absa Currie Cup structure so that a place can be made for the Southern Kings in a future competition.
The Supersport zone reports that the move was decided at this week's President’s Forum.
While the Currie Cup is currently a six team A section competition, the competitions committee was asked to have a look at an eight-team competition, with one of the two extra teams hopefully being the Kings.
SARU president Oregan Hoskins says they spoke at length about the issue of the Kings at the meeting.
He said that while no decisions were made, the discussion was about how to maintain the momentum of the Kings area now that they are out of Super Rugby.
Hoskins also confirmed that SARU’s stance at any change in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition was that there should be six franchises, and that this is not negotiable.
