Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits put on a partnership of 117 runs in the Women’s T20 World Cup match on Tuesday night to see South Africa through to the first home semi-final of an ICC event.
South Africa beat Bangladesh by 10 wickets with 13 balls to spare in their World Cup match in Cape Town and will now meet high-flying England.
Bangladesh put on a below-par 113 for 6 before Wolvaardt, sparkled with 66 off 56 balls, ably supported by Btits with a knock of 50 off 51 balls.
Wolvaardt was also named player of the match.
Speaking post-match, a beaming Captain Sune Luus, paid tribute to the two openers after a nervy start, saying they are world-class players.
She also relished the win, doffing her cap to the South African bowling unit for restricting winless Bangladesh to a low total.
Luus said she it was also an “incredible feeling” and “massive honour” to lead the team to a first home semi-final, calling for another packed Newlands Stadium at 3 PM on Friday.
Australia will play India in the first semi-final on Thursday.
